Sitting along the Columbia River between Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR is Hayden Island. Connected only by the last I-5 exit before entering Vancouver, the island is barely over 3 square miles. With a population of a little over 1300 people (in 2013) Hayden Island is one of Multnomah county ‘s smallest neighborhoods.
The part of Hayden Island closest to both sides of the freeway is the most commercially developed part of the island. In particular the West side of the island, often referred to as Jantzen Beach, is the more commercial side of the island. The farthest western stretch of the island remains mostly undeveloped.
Tomahawk Island is the part of Hayden Island that rests at the eastern most point. Here one finds the more residentially developed part of the island with house boats, condos, apartments and marinas.

Travel time into downtown Portland can vary due to traffic, but the island boasts enough things to keep locals satisfied while still remaining close to other local North Portland communities. Popular amenities like the Expo Center, Blue Heron Golf Course, and the sports fields of Delta Park are just minutes away.
Being the last tax free shopping before entering Washington, it’s understandable why one of the most noticeable things to do on Hayden Island is to shop! Big name stores like Target, Home Depot, and Best Buy help provide this isolated community many of the conveniences people crave today.
Marina life is great here. Multiple marinas offer year round storage of boats and easy access to the Columbia River. Many of the Christmas Ships line up here to start their journey up the Columbia for this Portland tradition.
