Goose Hollow is one of Portland’s oldest neighborhoods with a rich history that goes back nearly 200 years. Four residential communities are incorporated into the neighborhood: King’s Hill, Gander Ridge, Vista Ridge, and the Hollow.
The Hollow encompasses the neighborhood’s lower elevations, where brick apartments and homes are mixed in with Queen Anne vernacular cottages. In the higher elevations—King’s Hill, Gander Ridge, and Vista Ridge—homes previously owned by Portland’s wealthiest merchants at the turn of the century have been converted into apartment buildings, offering residents the chance to have a little taste of the city’s history. Goose Hollow is home to 5,088 residents as of 2016 and encompasses 0.436 square miles with a wide variety of housing options.
The Oregonian first used the name Goose Hollow to describe the neighborhood in 1879, after a dispute involving the ownership of geese among locals who raised them in the hollow around Tanner Creek (which has since been infilled).
