The neighborhood encompasses the Alphabet District, an area zoned for historic preservation between NW 17th and 24th Avenues; NW 21st Avenue, home to a number of one-of-a-kind dining destinations, an independent theater, and more; and NW 23rd Avenue, one of the city’s go-to destinations for food, drink, shopping, and entertainment with a uniquely Portland flavor.
More than 400 homes in the Alphabet District can be found on the National Register for Historic Places. Elsewhere throughout the neighborhood, newer homes and apartment buildings are springing up, especially restored older homes which have been transformed into modern living spaces. The average home was built in 1949. As of 2016, the neighborhood’s population was 14,891—making it one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in the city.

The Northwest District is one of Portland’s most premier destinations for shopping and dining. On NW 23rd, Lush, Sloan Boutique, and EcoVibe Apparel are local shopping favorites, while The Fireside, Thai Bloom, and Southland Whiskey Kitchen are known for unique dining experiences. Salt & Straw, a local ice cream shop on NW 23rd, often has a line stretched around the block of people waiting in line to try local favorites such as pear & blue cheese, freckled wood-blocked chocolate, or honey lavender. Other popular destinations in the neighborhood include Urban Fondue, Paley’s Place Bistro & Bar, Besaw’s, Elephant’s Delicatessen, and more.
In addition, the Northwest District is in close proximity to Forest Park and Washington Park, providing a reprieve from the fast pace of city living. Forest Park includes dozens of hiking and biking trails, and Washington Park boasts the International Rose Test Garden, the Oregon Zoo, and more.
