Just like its namesake in New York City, the Brooklyn neighborhood is quickly becoming one of Portland’s most desirable neighborhoods. It is also one of the oldest neighborhoods in Portland with the longest legacy of neighborhood involvement—the neighborhood association was formed in the late 1960’s.There is also a neighborhood historical society, which is committed to documenting and preserving the rich history of the neighborhood, as well as a neighborhood “Action Corps,” which is devoted to bettering the community by “working together toward the solution of its social, physical, and economic problems.”
The neighborhood is located in close proximity to some of Portland’s most well-known destinations, including the Sellwood neighborhood. As of 2016, the population was 5,166.
Home styles in the Brooklyn neighborhood are diverse and include bungalows, four squares, and more. There are also options for apartments or condos. While the neighborhood is largely residential, there are also businesses, some of which are housed in renovated historical buildings.
Brooklyn Attractions
Portland’s iconic Aladdin Theater is located in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Originally named Geller’s Theater when it opened in 1928, the Aladdin Theater has a long history of providing the community with great entertainment. After a short period of downturn, Paul Shuback purchased the theater in the 1980’s and began promoting it as a concert venue. Today, the Aladdin Theater is a popular performance venue for both local and major artists.
Oaks Amusement Park is also located near the Brooklyn neighborhood. Oaks Park is one of the only amusement parks in Oregon and includes more than twenty amusement park rides for a variety of ages, the country’s largest roller skating rink, a miniature golf course, and carnival games.
The Brooklyn School Park and Brooklyn Park are also great options for recreation in the Brooklyn neighborhood.
Brooklyn is situated near Sellwood, another popular Portland area, and is not too far from downtown Portland.
