The Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood offers something for everyone. It is sometimes referred to as the Clinton neighborhood.It is a diverse collection of residential areas, commercial streets, and industrial zones, and includes the “Ladd’s Addition” residential zone. The population as of 2016 was 7,725.
Homes in the neighborhood represent a diverse array of styles. Older homes with historic charm and modern condos might be found on the same street. Because of the diversity in home styles, the Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood is an ideal location for people representing a variety of different ages and lifestyles.
The name of the neighborhood derives from two schools, located at opposite ends of the neighborhood. Hosford Middle School is named after Methodist minister Chauncey O. Hosford, and Abernathy Elementary School is named after George Abernathy, also a Methodist missionary and Oregon’s first provincial governor. Neither of the two men held a direct interested in the neighborhood but both are crucial players in the history of the city.
Coffee is the drink of choice in the Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood. Residents might frequent K & F Clinton Street Coffeehouse, Compote, Palio’s Dessert & Coffeehouse, Little T American Baker, Oui Presse, Southeast Grind, Copper’s Coffee, and more.
The Clinton Street Theateris one of the oldest moviehouses in the United States. It has retained much of its original character and can hold up to 230 people. It is most well-known for an annual “Rocky Horror Picture Show” exhibition.
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), a popular spot for people of all ages, is located in the neighborhood.
The Clinton Community Garden was created in 1994, in partnership with the Hosford-Abernathy Neighborhood Association. It was once a residential property and has retained cabinets from the house that once stood on the property as a toolshed.
The neighborhood is well supplied with most amenities, including a New Seasons grocery store. Some residents say there is no need to leave the neighborhood because it has everything they need!
