The Richmond neighborhood in southeast Portland covers quite a bit of ground in the heart of the southeast quadrant. Its bordering neighborhoods convey the variety of aesthetics that the Richmond neighborhood covers: the Creston-Kenilworth, Hosford-Abernathy, Sunnyside, Mt. Tabor, South Tabor, and Foster-Powell neighborhoods all share a border with the Richmond neighborhood.
The neighborhood is unofficially and loosely dividedinto two sections.One side incorporates the Hawthorne area—known for its funky shops, tasty eateries, and urban appeal; while on the other side it incorporates Powell Boulevard, where strip malls are more common than independent coffee shops. However, this gives the neighborhood a broad appeal. As of 2016, the population was 11,932.
The neighborhood has a distinctly eccentric, funky vibe. Housing styles vary, as do the standard of upkeep of yards. Because of the variety of home styles, the Richmond neighborhood has the capacity to appeal to people of all walks of life.
Hawthorne is a popular commercial area which offers unique shops, eateries, and more. For the authentic Hawthorne experience, Hawthorne Hideaway is a good choice, as is Cup and Saucer Café or Bread and Ink Cafe. Niche shops such as Excalibur Books and Comics and Crossroads Music are other appealing spots in the area.
The Division Street area is also an up-and-coming retail area. The Stumptown Coffee roaster location is on Division, though it is fairly non-descript from the outside. Pok Pok is a popular Thai restaurant that receives high praise from Portlanders.
Clinton Park is nearby Richmond. It includes a playground, soccer field, softball field, and more.
The Richmond neighborhood is well situated in southeast Portland, relatively in the center of the region which offers residents easy access to surrounding attractions. Southeast Portland isn’t too far of a commute from downtown Portland.
