Sunnyside, commonly known as Belmont, is a unique neighborhood in Southeast Portland. The majority of homes in the area are Victorians that have been restored and renovated for modern living. The average home was built in 1933. There are also some newer apartments and condos in the neighborhood. The Sunnyside neighborhood supposedly got its name because it “sits in the shadow of the West Hills.”
While Portland is known as a “green” city overall, the Sunnyside neighborhood might be one of the most eco-friendly neighborhoods in the area. In 2008, the neighborhood began to pursue an ambitious energy plan to utilize solar power in nearly 350 homes. The effort was anchored by the Sunnyside Environmental School, and conveys the neighborhood’s attitude towards environmentally-focused neighborhood initiatives.
Sunnyside was the first of Portland’s streetcar neighborhoods—a term which refers to a neighborhood developed around the innovation of new forms of transportation, specifically the streetcar.
Sunnyside is home to the Belmont District, a popular commercial district with dozens of unique shops and eateries. Slappy Cakes is an innovative and beloved breakfast stop that allows visitors to make their own stack of pancakes right at their table. Saint Cupcake is a well-known bakery in the area, known for delicious cupcakes and pastries. Straight from New York Pizza offers pizza by the slice that rivals the best of NYC. Belmont is also home to Movie Madness, potentially one of the only remaining movie rental shops in the area and known for finding rare and out of print films.
At Christmastime, Peacock Lane is one of Portland’s most popular attractions. Peacock Lane is a street in the Sunnyside neighborhood of picturesque Tudor homes, nearly all of which decorate their homes with ornate lighting displays during the holidays. It draws quite a crowd for the last two weeks in December.
The Sunnyside neighborhood is well served by public transportation and is both very walkable and bike friendly.
