St Johns is one of North Portland’s up and coming neighborhoods, located less than 11 miles from downtown Portland. The neighborhood is home to over 14,000 people (as of 2013) and is located in Multnomah County.
St Johns is situated in a 10,925 square mile area bordered on 3 sides by the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. The Southeastern border of St Johns is known as “The Cut,” a strip of railroad that later joins Portland Blvd and connects to Marine Drive.
St Johns Attractions
The beautiful St Johns Bridge opened June 13, 1931 and is the gateway to this community, which was settled around 1850.
Beneath the St Johns bridge is Cathedral Park, a vast open park bordering the Willamette River. It plays host to a number of events throughout the year, including the annual Cathedral Park Jazz Festival.
Downtown St Johns is within walking and biking distance of all homes in the neighborhood and features hundreds of local and eclectic businesses, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. The seasonal St Johns farmers market includes locally grown produce, roasted coffee, food and live music. The market is open Saturdays from June to November.
Kelley Point Park lies in the Northern tip of St Johns and is a beach and fishing destination. Pier Park is central to the area and features a skate park, softball fields, bike trails, and an 18 hole frisbee golf course. The Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area is a beautiful preserve within easy biking distance and Sauvie Island is a short 10-minute drive from St Johns.
